Discussing safety in bus networks at the UITP Global Public Transport
From 4 to 7 June 2023, the UITP Global Public Transport took place in Barcelona, and SAFE BUS was present! On the Wednesday, project partners and sector experts joined for a Workshop to discuss project outcomes and exchange on best practices.
To kick-off the workshop, Project Coordinator Carmela Canonico (UITP) presented the SAFE BUS handbooks for bus drivers and managers, to foster a discussion on how to integrate anti-terrorism notions in public transport operators’ training.
A special attention was dedicated to the upcoming SAFE BUS e-learning courses, with a panel consisting of FLIXBUS (Theo Signer), ZTM (Aleksandra Puzyńska) and UITP (Adrien Poher) exploring the different needs in trainings.
After, a technical panel was held where operative personal from PTOs provided their experience and addressed the training material presented during the meeting. The panel consisted of ARRIVA (Rob Bergsma), MZA (Marta Brzozowska) and CARRIS (Joao Vieira).
Connecting public transport and safety
The workshop concluded with a valuable panel welcoming representatives from the police and public transport operators, who exchanged experiences and best practices on cooperation and joint exercises. The following parties participated in the panel: Catalan Police (MOSSOS, Comm. Monica Luis), Dutch Police (Anton Jansen) and ATAC (Cristiano Stifini).
Anton Jansen from the Dutch Police: “It is very important to have a single, direct point of contact. Accidents normally don’t happen between 09.00 and 17.00, therefore it’s key to have a fixed person that can be contacted simply. Here, the relationship you build is of essence: you need to build a network.”
